The ASEAN Armies Rifle Meet is an annual shooting competition among Army personnel of member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The first AARM was held in Camp Terendak, Malacca, Malaysia in 1991.

The countries that participated in competition were Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The Philippines hosted the AARM at Fort Magsaysay, Palayan City in 1995 and in 2001.

During the 15th AARM, which was held in Brunei, the Philippines bagged the most number of gold medals and championship trophies and emerged as the overall leader.

This year, Philippine Army personnel composed the country’s AARM shooting contingent.

. . . the 50-member Army team, composed of 12 officers and 38 enlisted personnel, turned back tournament favorite Singapore (3rd place), Vietnam (4th); 1991 titlist Malaysia (5th) and the highly fancied Thailand (6th) to clinch runner-up honors.

At the end of the two-week shootfest, the Fort Magsaysay-based Armymen, headed by Col. Julius Moreno and team manager Maj. Leo Guinid, won 9 gold, 22 silver and 11 bronze medals and the most coveted Perpetual Help Trophy won by Sgt. Jennifer de Belen.

De Belen, a 28-year-old pistol artist, who was born and raised in Lingayen, Pangasinan, emerged as “Juara Umum” or Top Gun in the Ladies’ Division Individual Pistol Match 1 and champion in the Pistol Match 2 Failing Plates, before she hauled home the most coveted Perpetual Trophy for winning the Individual Ladies/Pistol Event for the third consecutive year. It was contested by 37 elite competitors from nine other Asean nations. De Belen is presently assigned at Tradoc in Fort Magsaysay, Palanan City, Nueva Ecija.

The overall Ladies Pistol Team Event Match 4 runner-up honors went to the Filipina shooters, mentored by Tradoc Marksmanship instructor and veteran coach Capt. Harold Cabunoc and were bannered by team captain De Belen, Sgts. Josephine Dumlao, Khan Hassan, Cpl. Charity Cayaban and Pfc Arlide Monarca, who were all gold medalists.

The Philippine Army men’s team harvested five golds to capture the championship in the Rifle Match 5, using M-16 Armalite while veteran precision shooter Sgt. Rodney Rizano, 28, from Sto. Niño, South Cotabato, clinched the individual crown.

The team composed of Sgt. Alvin Anselmo, Sgt. Lloyd Lusad, Cpl. Alan Lao, Sgt. Rodney Rizano and Pfc Eddie Yag-ao, who were also gold medalists.

The Asean Armies Rifle Meet, the away-from-home, friendly competition among the six original member-Armies in the region which ballooned to 10 at present, is a result of consultation among members to seek ways to strengthen harmony and cooperation between the armies of the Asean. Hosting of the annual meet rotates among the member-armies starting with the Malaysian Army in 1991 at the Terendak Camp in Malacca, Malaysia. From then on, the annual event rotated among the other members.
