Amx 13 tanks?

I was checking into GATRA website yesterday and I found out that Indonesia still possessed >600 AMX 13 tanks. And from that "huge" numbers, most of all still used Renault's 1939 SOFAM :eek:nfloorl: but 90 of them has been "repowering". What I didn't know is the capabilities. Did anyone know which country "probably" still using AMX 13?

According to the IISS (Military Balance 2007, published 3 months ago), Indonesia has about 275 AMX-13.

Ecuador 24
Peru 110 (ca 90 serviceable)
Venezuela 31
Morocco 5
Cote D'Ivoire 5
Singapore ca 350

The other former users are thought to have withdrawn it from service. Often, it takes a while for word to get through. e.g. Lebanon still had it listed in 2002, but it's doubtful if any were operational. The Moroccan survivors may be gate guards now. :D

I'm surprised to find Indonesia with >600 AMX-13s too. Last I heard, they only bought 100 from the Dutch in the 70s.

http://lcweb2.loc.gov/frd/cs/indonesia/id_appen.html

Some sources have placed their AMX-13 holdings at between 200-300. I think the consensus is that Singapore probably has the highest holdings currently. However this is now being replaced as well.
yeah, I'm surprised to. last year I visited "BENGPUSPALAD" where they repowering some tanks. But I didn't notice it was AMX 13, I found out large number of it (maybe about 60 or 70) were waiting to be repowered. I also saw some alvis saladin. they're so rusty man, I bet you just need to give it a good kick to shatter it :eek:nfloorl: . Last I heard, 15 saladin already "serviceable".

Well, if the Leos are supposed to replace the AMX-13s in the SAF, assuming 1-for-1 replacement, the figure will be whittled down to about 250 soon ...

The whittling's already started ...

The version of the AMX-13 tanks used by Singapore is the locally upgraded SM1 version. It is being done in the 80s. I am trained in the SM1 during my National Service time.

However, it is getting obsolete. Some of the 350 tanks are already being scrapped. Its replacement is rumoured to be ready soon.

In fact some of the AMX-13 tanks owned by the Indonesian army is the SM1 version too as they have been upgraded by Singapore.

I always liked the AMX-13, that turret design makes it one of the most interesting Light tanks ever built.

However, it is a little long in the tooth, as the English would say. Why dont they capitalize one success and build a modern version, with better materials and stronger armor? It might be worth while, considering how popular the old one is.

hmm, according to the sites, new upgraded AMX 13 use diesel engine. but what I found is that most of them still used petrol:unknown
I have read some where that there is a handful of AMX-3 tanks in TNI is being upgraded to SM1 standard. However, i have been searching in vain on the net for this info for not been successful.

The Diesel engine being used is from Detriot Diesel.

Don't get that surprised, the AMX-13 is still a "tank" of massive ussage in south american countries like Argentina (furthermore, they bouth nearly a hundred of brand new SK-105 chassis and installed their old AMX-13 turrets on them, creating their "new tank" the "Patagon"), Peru (placed in their southern boundary, with Chile) or Bolivia.

The only country in South America to have "newer" tanks is Chile, with the Leopard 1V and the acquisition of used Leopard 2A4s from Germany this year.

Several South American countries have newer tanks than AMX-13. Brazil has both M60A3 & Leopard 1, Argentina has TAM, Venezuela has AMX-30. BTW, doesn't Bolivia have SK-105, not AMX-13?

yeah, at least we've got something to be called "tanks". with 632 in number, now its quantity over quality I guess. well we have to wait until the new T-90 arrive... (if they will:D )
