'Between now and next March, the U.S.-led coalition will deliver 22,000 vehicles, including 514 new four-wheeled “mobile strike force” armored vehicles yet to be used in Afghanistan, 44 airplanes and helicopters, 40,000 weapons, and tens of thousands of radios and other pieces of communications gear. “It’s an enormous amount of equipment, vehicles and weapons,” said one U.S. military official.'

What kind of vehicles, aircraft and weapons could be sent over to the ANA?

The small arms equates to M16s, M249s, M203s, M240Bs but wouldn't be suprised if this has changed.

Some of the vehicles are up-armoured Humvees (but my noggin thinks theres going to be some M1117s in there too)

BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan (February 23, 2009) - Coalition Forces are outfitting the Afghan National Army by providing hundreds of weapons and dozens of up-armored humvees through the NATO Force Modernization Project.

The ANA 203rd Thunder Corps will receive hundreds of weapons including M-16 rifles, M-249 squad automatic weapon, M-203 grenade launchers and M-240B machine gun. They will also receive approximately 40 up-armored humvees by the time the fielding is complete.

Unfortunately the latest reports published in the media reckon the Afghan government doesn't have the financial or man-power resources to keep all this new kit in service once the draw down begins. The coalition are looking at ways to greatly reduce the financial burden of keeping a sizable standing army equipped and fully functioning. For example they have removed all air-conditioners from the Afghan army barracks which is estimated to safe USD100 million per-year!

Having lots of nice shiny kit is meaningless if it can't be well maintained and kept in working order.
