hey!

About 3 months ago i applyed for a postion in the ADF as a Electrician, i then went to my JOSE day. unfortunitly i didnt get high enoughf marks on the Tech Tests and wasnt able to continue. they offerd me other roles like Builder, Plumber, Fitter and Turner ect ect.

I had already decided long ago that i wanted to become an electrician because i had already completed 4 weeks work experiance with 2 different Electrical Companys.

So i turned them down and they shut my file. Now im not aloud to re apply and sit the tests again for another 12 months.

Im currently studdying Year 11. For the last 2 months now i have been doing some seriouse thinking about the career i want in the near future. I am starting to think that maybe i will join as a rifleman instead, i sort of belive that this is the job i am best suited for (you couldnt get me away from army stuff when i was a pup). But my parents/Friends have always steered me away from doing any job that envolves Combat.

I also have always been very interested and keen to Serve my Country of australia and the lives it holds.

What i am wondering is:

Whats it like being a Rifleman in the Australian Army (over seas members are welcome to give their input as well)

Should i complete a trade Before joining so i have something to fall back on

Are you happy you have joined? and are you planning on staying in the ADF?

How high up the ranks can a rifleman get? and how much can he earn if ranked high?

any and all info/support would be great. thankyou

While I respect your call to serve your country I think every now and then we need to be a little selfish with what we do with our lives. You said you wanted to be an electrician first and foremost but thought doing that in the ADF would fulfill both your wish to serve and your passion. Yet they turned you down. Becoming a grunt is about transforming yourself into a warrior. You will face hardships that will test your limits, when called you will be in terrifying situations and see people die. If this sounds like your calling then go for it but if you really want to be an electrician I say stick with the private sector, they pay better anyway. Don't do it just b/c your family wants you to.

I was mainly pushed towards becoming an Electrician From my parents. They didnt want me to Become a Rifleman. So i thaught doing a trade in the army would be the next best thing.

i was thinking that i might Get qaulified out in the private sector then give a combat role a crack a little bit later on.

Just one quik question. What tasks do rifleman carry out when not at war or Peace keeping? you know, like when there not needed at a certain time. Do they do trainin excercises and stuff?

Also is their anyone with MSN from Australia that could i could Add to my contact list for a talk? cheers

g,day southy! mate, the best advice i could give you is definatly get some sort of formal qualification/life expearience before becoming a grunt. i did eight yrs as a grunt and loved most of it! However,as a grunt, you will expearience things and push youre self harder than most civies will ever do! This has pro,s and cons. Good points are when you hear civies complaining about trivial things, youll wonder what they are on about etc. You will know your limits and do a good job for any future employer.Youre self discipline will tower above most civies. You will be hardend emotionlly.(this can also be a bad point!) some of the down time can be frustrating,as can the repetitive training. This is part of being an infantry soldier, but it all serves a purpose. its not all range shoots and war games! some blokes burn out faster than others, and after 4 years, theve had enough. in that case, a trade or skill in some civie job will be a huge advantage. your time in the army will open a lot of doors in the civillian workforce, but having something to fall back on + army expearience will give you an edge. I wish i had done a refigeration mech apprenticeship when i had the chance....but i joined up at 17,in retrospect, to young! good luck mate.
