As far as I know BAF has the basic advanced version of Q-5. PAF bought the same but modified it with some wester techs, also China improved it a bit for Pakistan.

I wounder if Pakistan bought Q-5A to train the pilots for Air to Ground Nuke Attack???

Its time PAF & PLAAF retire them though !

They are the most ridiculed plane in the PAF believe me but they are a useful CAS and Battlefield inderdiction platform.

I wouldn't call them vintage aircraft just yet. They are still highly effective in their role as a CAS jet. The lastest variant, Q-5E/F, is capable of deploying laser guided bombs and C-701 ASM. With these upgrades, it shouldn't be much of a problem operating the Q-5 until next decade.

One must know that CAS aircraft does not require advanced avionics and weapon system to be effective. Take a look at the A-10's currently operated by the U.S military, they are by no means advance compare to modern fighters and yet they have proven themselves again and again in both Gulf Wars.

Guys,

A10 can take a tremendous beating and still complete its assignment. Plus its engines have a very peculiar design configuration. Can the A 5 take the similiar beating? Does the pilot have have the same amount of protection from flack in the cockpit---I don't think so. But it better than not having any.

A5, for the PAF is a cheap bomb truck. That's its purpose so comparing it with A-10 or any other dedicated ground attack aircraft is pointless. In case of war, it's intended use is to deliever unguided bombs and rockets on lightly defended targets and provide some CAS.

Not sure if any of you have been in the cockpit of an Q-5 Attacker before, but the pilot is protected by a thick bulletproof glass. It is one of the most, if not the most, robust fighter operated by China. The only things Q-5 lacks behind A-10 are avionics and weapon load, which it makes up for in unit price.

Note that while Q-5 might not be as capable as the latest A-10, it certainly ain't no piece of junk, especially when upgraded into E/F config.

These two aircraft are designed for different role. Q-5 is a dedicated CAS aircraft while JH-7 are a maritime strike platform. Using JH-7 as a CAS would be a waste of valuable resources and putting neccessary danger to the airplane as it's capable of deploying its ordinance beyond the reach of enemy anti-aircraft fire. CAS role should be left to platforms with tough airframe like A-10's and Q-5's.

Currently the U.S plans to operate the A-10 fleet beyond 2020. Given this situation and the upgrade options available for Q-5, the fleet can still be effective for many years to come.

I would wait out till F-35 get into production and then start replacing PAF's F-7's, Mirages and Fantans with them.

Again F-35 JSF is not a good option to replace the Q-5 Fantan. The problem is that missions like CAS should be left to tough and cheap aircraft so your advance platforms wouldn't have to face unnecessary loss. Regardless of whether Pakistan will to able to obtain F-35, you probably would want to keep your best fighters to maintain air superiority.

infact I was intrested to compare the A-5 IIIs of BAF with those being operated by PAF, but everybody is comparing A-5, in general with other aircraft. Lets have the comparetive specs of A-5 IIIs of PAF and BAF. As far as the replacement is concerned, I think Q-5 will remain in service for quite some time since PLAAF has constantly upgraded them; all along till rtecently.

PAF can't even get the f-16 so never mind the f-35
F-35 has atleast 8 more years to be in full production.
So far 8+ countries are involved in the project. Almost all of them are putting in money for its research and development and they will have their say in the project in one form or another. It won't be an entirely US decision whom to sell the aircraft. Since politics is the name of the game when it comes to acquiring jets form US. It would be a whole new ball game with the F-35

Things will most probably be a lot more better for pakistan in the coming years.
F-16's would have be landing in Pakistan if it wasn't for India backstabbing us but i am pretty damn sure it's a matter of WHEN and not IF.
