Thales Naval, On 16 May the first SMART-S Mk2 antenna system was installed on the test tower at the Thales plant in Hengelo. Now that the antenna integration has been completed, the processing integration is nearly finished and the first system integration phase has been successfully concluded, the SMART-S Mk2 team is focussing on the systems tests.
On the test tower, a number of tests will be performed, including the test of the air image compilation. Subsequently, the qualification tests and finally the flight trails will be held. The system will also be functionally tested with a towed ball that has the radar cross section of a small target.
The two SMART-S Mk2 systems are built and tested practically simultaneously. At present the second antenna is tested in the Compact Antenna Test Range and will be prepared for the environmental tests that will take about three months. After that, it will be subjected to system tests on top of the radar test tower.
The first system will be ready for the Factory Acceptance Test at the end of this year; the second system in the third quarter of 2007.
The two SMART-S Mk2 systems will be installed on board of the new Flexible Support Ships (FSS) of the Royal Danish Navy that are presently being built.
