Rafael, HAIFA, Israel: Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. will provide the German Air Force with Litening navigation and targeting pods for its Tornado and Eurofighters. The $25M deal is a follow-up to the German's previous order for a similar amount.
The Litening is one of the most advanced navigation and targeting pods available today. The pod is equipped with day and night sights and multiple sensor array that enables high confidence target selection, identification, precise strike and damage assessment. Litening enables fighter air crews to carry out a wide range of missions, including: detection / recognition /identification and laser designation of air-to-ground and maritime targets.
Haim Jacobovitz, Head of the Electro-Optics Directorate in Rafael says that the fact that the German Air Force has decided to procure additional Litening pods confirms the advanced capabilities and performance of the system. Jacobovitz adds that the Litening, together with Rafael's RecceLite tactical reconnaissance pod creates a powerful electro-optic solution for Air Forces worldwide.
Hundreds of Litening pods are operational in many air forces around the world; among them, the Israeli Air Force on its F-16Is and F-16Cs, and in the American, Australian, Dutch and Hungarian Air Forces.
The US Congress recently approved the procurement of additional Litening pods in the amount of about $39M.
