Korea Overseas Information Service, Korea and the United States are negotiating an ammunition procurement agreement to help Seoul obtain military supplies swiftly in case of war on the Korean Peninsula, the Defense Ministry said on Tuesday (Nov. 8).
The ministry's delegation suggested the idea to its U.S. counterpart during a meeting of the Logistics Cooperation Committee (LCC), a sub-panel of the annual Security Consultative Meeting (SCM), last June in Hawaii, ministry officials said.
“We made the proposal in order to secure military ammunition and equipment swiftly in case of an emergency on the peninsula. It also aims to reduce the time of getting approval from the U.S. Congress for buying U.S. military equipment,” Maj. Gen. Choi Kwang-sup, chief of the ministry's logistics office, told reporters.
Under the proposed agreement, South Korea would be provided by the U.S. detailed information on the contact points and locations of military procurement agencies in the U.S. to help the country's military officers purchase military materials, including weapons systems, swiftly and efficiently, Choi said.
The U.S. said it wanted further negotiations on the issue between the two allies, he added.
