Korean Information Service, Korea will open a state-of-the-art aircraft testing center later this week as part of efforts to upgrade its aerospace industry, the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) said Tuesday (Oct. 30).
The 188,800-square-meter facility in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province, includes an anechoic chamber and a climatic chamber to simulate aircraft conditions, the state-run agency said.
“The facilities that will open on Wednesday provide the same environments that are encountered in actual operation of fighter jets, helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles, which are under domestic development,” said Lee Jong-hee, director of the ADD's test and experiment team.
Korea is one of the few nations to have such an advanced aircraft test center, he added.
The 55-million-dollar project to build the facility was established in 2003 with the help of Boeing, which offered related technology in accordance with its contract with Seoul on the sale of 40 F-15K fighter jets.
