Korean Information Service, The Korean army is set to begin producing its new infantry fighting vehicle in large quantities later this month, defense sources said Monday (June 11).
Officially named Next Infantry Fighting Vehicle (NIFV), the amphibious vehicle was developed in 2005, and the Army has been testing its capability.
The NIFV has a mounted, stabilized 40-millimeter cannon, 7.63-mm machine gun and a launcher for anti-tank guided missiles, making it capable of shooting down slow-moving helicopters and aircraft.
It can run at the speed of up to 70 kilometers an hour on the ground. The 26-ton NIFV can carry a crew of three and a squad of nine soldiers.

The Army plans to hold a ceremony to mark the start of production of NIFV on June 27, which will be attended by senior government and military officials including Defense Minister Kim Jang-soo.
Developers of the NIFV here are targeting both the domestic and export markets.
