HOUSTON: While Americans prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving Day with family reunions and large amounts of turkey and dressing, KBR is also planning to serve the troops currently deployed a Thanksgiving feast with all the trimmings.
“It is a privilege for KBR to serve a warm Thanksgiving meal to the brave men and women who defend our freedom. Their dedication and commitment to our country is deeply appreciated,” said Bill Utt, KBR's president and chief executive officer. “I also want to extend a heartfelt thanks to all of our employees and contractors who work hard everyday, serving the needs of our military.”
As part of the Logistics Civil Augmentation Program (LOGCAP) contract, KBR has extensively planned all the festivities down to the pumpkin pie for the troops.
“KBR goes 'all out' on this special day; from going that extra mile to making a little special something for the traditional Thanksgiving meal to decorating the dining facilities, giving the soldiers a Thanksgiving they won't forget,” said John Young KBR's theater food service manager for the Middle East.
Dinner for Extended Family
Planning for the holiday meal began months ago and has called on the specialized and award-winning talents of the entire KBR food service staff, responsible for overseeing more than 100 dining facilities across Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan and Djibouti.
On Thanksgiving Day, KBR plans to serve approximately:
170,000 pounds of turkey
90,000 pounds of boneless ham
40,000 pounds of stuffing
10,000 pounds of mashed potatoes
90,000 pounds of cranberry sauce
10,000 gallons of eggnog
130,000 pies
Other menu items will vary from site to site and may include a medley of fresh fruits, salads, vegetable dishes and homemade baked goods.
In addition to overseeing meal preparations, food service managers at each dining facility are also encouraged to create uniquely themed holiday decorations, most of which must be made from scratch and double as food displays.
KBR food services staffs across the Middle East region apply their talents to create decorations using custom-made sugar-cube sculptures, ice carvings, intricately carved melons, decorated turkeys, gingerbread house villages and special lighting to make each dining facility appear as festive as possible.
“While the food and decorations are a big part of the festivities, we know that ultimately Thanksgiving is about taking care of those that are on the front lines and bringing happiness and joy to their lives,” said Young.

The company's team is comprised of civilians who voluntarily place themselves in a dangerous environment to make our troops feel a little closer to home. Many sign up because they feel they make a difference to U.S. soldiers and the Iraqi people.
