MENL, LONDON [MENL] — An Israeli program to upgrade MiG fighter-jets has been offered to a range of countries, including NATO aspirants.
Industry sources said the marketing of the Israeli upgrade is based on the success of the modernization of the MiG-21 fighter-jet for the Romanian Air Force. Israel's Elbit Systems upgraded 110 MiG-21 Lancers in a project with Romania's Aerostar that ended recently.
Aerostar has been marketing the MiG-21 upgrade based on the performance of Romania's MiG fleet in NATO exercises. Bucharest has been a candidate for the alliance.
The Romanian upgraded MiG-21 Lancers have accumulated more than 30,000 flights, Aerostar said, and constitute the backbone of the Romanian Air Force. The MiG-21 conduct such missions as close air support, air defense and training.
