The Australian Air Force's largest combat exercise is due to begin in the northern city of Darwin.
The biennial exercise, codenamed Pitch Black, involves more than 1,500 personnel and 75 aircraft from Australia, Singapore, France and Thailand.
The Chief of the Australian Air Force, Air Marshal Angus Houston, says the activities will start slowly and build up to a very complex and sophisticated form of air combat warfare.
“While we conduct the exercise, we have the opportunity to exercise just about all elements of the airforce in their role in an air combat set of circumstances,” he said.
