Indian Government News, The Defence Forces have lost 29 combat aircraft in accidents during the period April 2004 to 31st March, 2007.
The year-wise details are as follows:
2004-2005: 13
2005-2006: 8
2006-2007: 8
Total: 29
Out of these 29 combat aircraft lost, eight were MiG-21s, six were Jaguars, four were MiG-27s, three were MiG-29s, four were Mirages, one was a Bison and three were Sea Harriers.
The details of aircraft manufactured, overhauled and upgraded by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited are as follows:
Jaguar: Manufactured: 3; Overhauled: 5
Mirage: Overhauled: 4;
MiG-21: Manufactured: 2; Overhauled: 8
Bison: Overhauled: 1; Upgraded: 1
MiG-23: none
MiG-27: Manufactured: 3; Overhauled: 3
MiG-29: Overhauled: 3
These aircraft were overhauled/upgraded at HAL between the years 1992 to 2004. Approximately between 40% – 50% operational life was balance on these aircraft at the time of crash.
