New Delhi, India: India Sunday successfully fired the first of its production-model BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles from a mobile launcher in a heavy downpour.
The missile was fired from India's test range of Chandipur, sources told the Press Trust of India.
The missile, developed jointly with Russian companies, can strike targets 290 km (180 miles) away, a distance limited by international arms agreements.
The missile exceeds in speed the subsonic American Tomahawk missile and has a claimed accuracy that is appreciably better. The missile, primarily designed as an anti-ship weapon, is also being deployed by Russian forces.
India's nuclear rival Pakistan has also tested different types of missiles in recent months. Both countries are scheduled to meet soon for talks to lower border tensions.
