Serbian Gov Website, Belgrade, Oct 16, 2003 – The Serbian government has approved a Strategy for Military Industry Restructuring, proposed by the Ministry of Economy and Privatisation.
Under the strategy, parts of companies dealing with civilian production will be privatised following restructuring, while weapons producing units will operate as part of Serbia's defence industry.
The restructuring is aimed at resolving problems that the country's military industry has been facing in the past ten years, including low capacity utilisation, reduced needs of the local market and nearly suspended exports, the government said in a statement.
Weapons making divisions of military companies might be offered for sale only following a thorough analysis of the military sector, the statement said, noting that the units will be organised to become the backbone of arms and military equipment production for the country's police and army.
