Finnish Government, Finland's Navy has signed a contract with TietoSaab Systems for purchasing the prototype of an ultramodern surveillance system to enhance its underwater monitoring capabilities, the navy said in a statement Friday.
The acquisition is part of a navy development programme which aims at improving Finland's ability to secure vital sea lanes.
Valued at 1.8 million euros, the prototype system will be evaluated before a decision is made on possible larger acquisitions in 2010 at the earliest.
“The surveillance system is so accurate that a skilled operator can distinguish different vessel types by name by listening to their propeller noises, for example,” explained Commander Heikki Rauhala, navy command.
