LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va: An F-15C pilot's failure to maintain his designated altitude due to channelized attention during a training mission caused the mid-air collision with an F-16 over the Yukon Military Operating Area, approximately 80 miles east of Eielson AFB, Alaska, on June 11, according to an Air Force report released today.
The pilot of the F-15 safely ejected from the aircraft. The $33.1 million aircraft, assigned to the 1st Fighter Wing here, was destroyed on impact. The F-16, assigned to the 57th Wing, Nellis AFB, Nev., sustained minor damage to the left wing and tail section. The damaged F-16 was able to land at Eielson AFB. The damage to the F-16 was valued at $1.04 million.
There were no fatalities and the estimated cost for the clean-up of the F-15 wreckage at the remote crash site is $19,000. The pilot was the only crewmember aboard the single-seat F-15C model.
