AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, East African leaders on March 20 backed embattled Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed in pressing the United Nations to lift an arms embargo on the lawless Horn of Africa nation and reiterated plans to deploy peacekeepers to help restore stability.
Less than a week after the U.N. Security Council condemned violations of the 14-year-embargo, the seven-nation Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), said lifting it would assist the Somali transitional government to enhance national security.
