DRS Technologies, Inc., PARSIPPANY: DRS Technologies, Inc. announced today that it was selected for a new $186 million contract, including options, to design and produce up to shipsets of Integrated Fight Through Power (IFTP) systems for the U.S. Navy's next-generation DDG-1000 destroyers, formerly known as DD(X).
IFTP will support the destroyers' Integrated Power System (IPS) and provide the means for conversion and distribution of the ships' service power to various shipboard weapons and sensor systems, as well as various auxiliary systems.
DRS was selected to receive the award by General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, located in Bath, Maine. DRS will provide detailed design, development, qualification and production of advanced power conversion modules for the DDG-1000 Ship Service Distribution System. These power-dense modules frame the IFTP concept developed by the Naval Sea Systems Command. Work for this contract will be performed by the company's DRS Power & Control Technologies unit in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, DRS Power Technologies unit in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, and DRS Laurel Technologies unit in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and will continue through March 2016.
“DRS's IFTP solution offers proven technology that will result in lighter, smaller and more power-dense equipment than shipboard electrical architectures available today,” said Steven T. Schorer, president of DRS's C4I Group. “Our next-generation advanced power conversion technologies will facilitate the U.S. Navy's vision of affordable, common, integrated power systems on future warships. The selection of DRS solidifies our position as a strategic partner with the U.S. shipbuilding industry for next-generation integrated power systems.”
DRS's IFTP solution will utilize state-of-the art power conversion hardware and software to allow for reconfiguration of the DDG-1000 power distribution system in the event of a change in load requirements, component failure or battle damage. IFTP is part of the IPS, which integrates propulsion and electric systems to provide electrical power for all ship propulsion and war fighting needs.
