DESTROYER ESCORTS 1940s & 1950s
There are three films on this video. The first one, produced in 1944 by the Navy, looks at the role of and operations aboard destroyer escorts. Includes excellent scenes of 20mm, 40mm, and 3-inch 50 guns, as well as sailors launching torpedos, hedge hogs and Mark 9 depth charges. Scenes of DE taking on fuel, sailors standing watch, inspections and liberty. Features shakedown cruise of USS Frament (DE-677).
The second film follows a group of destroyer escorts on a European cruise in the mid-1950s. Reservists are shown learning the duties that sailors perform aboard ship and they are followed on liberty at various ports. Scenes shot aboard USS Allen (DE-531), USS Tills (DE-748), USS McClelland (DE-750), USS Hall (DE-597), USS Snyder (DE-745) and USS Kyne (DE-744).
The third film is a short subject (approximately 6 min.) filmed aboard USS Charles E. Brannon (DE-446) with scenes above and below deck.
