Nine Finnish citizens are suspected of involvement in the export of tank parts to Syria from Russia via Finland.
The shipment of tank parts was discovered in Vuosaari harbour, in eastern Helsinki, on 8 January. The container in question was due to be shipped to Syria on board the Finnlines vessel M/S Finnsun.
It contained 27 packages with tank parts weighing a total of 9,627 kilogrammes. No export license had been sought for the parts, and military exports to Syria are currently banned by order of the European Council.
Although nine people are suspected of involvement, nobody has yet been arrested or formally charged. Four of the suspects are from the ship’s crew, with five Finnlines employees also under suspicion.
Customs will next report on the investigation on 16 May.
