SAN ANTONIO, Texas (DefenceTalk): The CSAF's Scope focuses on current topics the Air Force chief of staff feels are of special importance to today's Airmen, and the latest topic to come into view on the scope is fifth-generation fighters.
Among Gen. T. Michael Moseley's top issues is the importance of maintaining air superiority with the acquisition of a new generation of fighters.
“Since April 1953, we have owned the skies over every battlefield, guaranteeing our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines the freedom to attack, freedom from attack and freedom to maneuver,” General Moseley said. “Yet, until the F-22 (Raptor) became operational in 2005, America's Air Force had not fielded a new fighter since the 1970s.”
General Moseley said that during this time our adversaries continued to develop weaponry and technology that will quickly overcome our current inventory of fourth-generation fighters such as the F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon.
Other topics on the CSAF's Scope include space recapitalization and modernization, portraits in courage and the new tanker. The general has written a brief explanation of each topic so Airmen can better understand the issues he is working and why they are important to the Air Force's senior leaders.
