Avio, Avio supplied the engines and the management system for the new frigate Andrea Doria, launched today in Riva Trigoso (Genoa).
Avio designed and supplied the LM2500 propulsion modules and the platform automation system, developed in collaboration with Elsag S.p.A. and French company DCN. To Avio the contract relating to the entire Horizon program is worth over 40 million euro.
Avio engines propel the Andrea Doria at a top speed of 29 knots (ca 55 km/h). With over 100 LM 2500 naval propulsion modules produced, Avio is the second greatest company in the world for number of propulsion packages delivered. The integrated platform system equipping the ship controls virtually all on-board machines by monitoring some 11,000 parameters, and enhances the safety of the ship, by suggesting the appropriate course of action to the crew in any circumstances, even the most critical ones.
The leading-edge technology embodied in Avio systems translates into ease of use: via the on-board network, an enormous amount of information is transmitted at a speed of 100 Mbps to be displayed as user-friendly charts on the monitors installed in different rooms. During navigation, the crew have access to training sessions to further improve their skills. In this manner, the number of people manning the ship can be greatly reduced: thanks to the highly sophisticated automation technology, it takes fewer than 200 people to operate a ship of this size and complexity.
Avio is present in Italy and abroad with 14 plants and 4,700 employees. It works in four sectors of activities: modules and components for aircraft engines, civil and military engine overhauling services, space and aircraft-derived turbines for marine applications. It is a world leader in power transmissions and Italy
