AAP,
Australia is considering buying Leopard 2 tanks from Switzerland to replace the army's 30-year-old machines.
The Swiss army is selling between 100 and 150 of the German-built main battle tanks.
A spokeswoman for Defence Minister Robert Hill confirmed the government was negotiating with the Swiss but refused to give details.
“One offer being considered for the replacement tanks is from the Swiss government of existing Leopard 2A4 tanks that have been further upgraded,” she said.
“I don't think it is appropriate to provide any other detail of the offer in the middle of the assessment process.”
The Australian army operates about 60 Leopard 1 machines.
