Australian Department of Defence, A team of contracted civilian personnel deployed to the Middle East Area of Operations (MEAO) to complete operational enhancements to the Australian Light Armoured Vehicles (ASLAVs) will be welcomed back home on Sunday morning, 30 October.
The ASLAVs deployed to the MEAO as part of the Al Muthanna Task Group were (AMTG) fitted with special spall liners or curtains to help protect our troops. The completion of the in theatre operational enhancements is a significant milestone for the Department of Defence, and Defence industry.
Twelve Defence industry civilian contractors were deployed as part of a 23-man team making up the ASLAV MEAO Enhancement Group (AMEG). Six of the contractors were from General Dynamics Land Systems – Australia, based in Adelaide, whilst the remaining six contractors were sourced within Australia by Armatec Survivability Corporation, based in Ontario, Canada.
“The success of the AMEG, more than one month ahead of the original schedule, is a true indication of what can be achieved when Defence and industry team to meet the operational needs of the Australian Defence Force,” said Colonel Bill Horrocks, Acting/Director General, Land Manoeuvre Systems.
“All workers, military and civilian, within the AMEG worked side by side as a single team. The hours worked were long, with only one day off every week. Despite the arduous conditions, all AMEG personnel worked extremely well to get the job done,” said Colonel Horrocks.
The contractors are due to be greeted by Commander 1st Brigade, Brigadier John Cantwell, 0600hrs on Sunday 30 October, at Darwin Airport.
