Daily Press, The Army's Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, whose operations center is at Fort Eustis, is organizing the largest movement of U.S. troops and equipment since World War II.
Over the next three months, elements of eight Army divisions and large collections of Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps equipment will be transported to Iraq and Afghanistan as part of the Defense Department's troop replacement initiative.
More than a third more equipment is being shipped now than was shipped when combat operations in Iraq began.
Because of troop rotations, the number of deployed American service members in Iraq and Afghanistan will drop from 130,000 to 105,000.
“We have our work cut out for us,” said Maj. Gen. Ann Dunwoody, commander of the distribution command.
“We know where the challenges lie.”
