The Argentinian President Christina Fernandez de Kirchner is in Moscow to sign a series of strategic partnership deals with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.
While focussing on trade, energy projects and communication, agreements on military cooperation will also be signed.
Among them could potentially be a deal for Moscow to supply the Argentinians with 12 Sukhoi SU-24 attack aircraft.
A proposal that has already led to the British Defence Secretary announcing that the UK’s military presence on the Falkland Islands will be beefed up.
With the Ukraine crisis badly damaging Russia’s relations with the West, President Putin is particularly keen to foster support in Latin America.
In President Kirchner he’s found a welcome ally, the pair uniting in their increasingly hostile relationships with Europe and the United States.
Visiting Buenos Aires last year Putin added his weight to Argentina’s claim to sovereignty over the Falklands, calling for direct negotiations with the UK government.
