http://www.rocketfootball.net, Ever notice the Nike Ajax Rocket just outside of the north endzone of the Glass Bowl? The US Army donated the missile to the University of Toledo in 1961. Over the years the weather has taken its toll on the missile, but thanks to Pat Ryan and Grabke's Body Shop the missile is getting refurbished.
Pat Ryan, a UT alumnus, retired from the US Army in 1998 after 20 years of service. After returning back to the Toledo area, Mr. Ryan began making up for lost time. He has been attending Rocket football and basketball games ever since. However, his dedication to the University does not stop there. Pat knew the Ajax Rocket was starting to show signs of age so he took matters into his own hands. He coordinated in effort with the University and Grabke's Body Shop to get the missile restored.
A couple of weeks ago Pat Ryan's vision started to become a reality when a crane and bulldozer removed the Nike Ajax missile from its stand, enroute to Grabke's Body Shop on Angola road. In the last few days, the missile has been sandblasted and is currently in the process of being painted.
Steve Grabke and his son Paul run Grabke's Body Shop. Paul is an Army veteran himself and has taken the leadership on this project. “I served my country in the Infantry and am more than willing to try and always help people in the community as well as organizations” said Paul. “That's how my father raised us children.” Paul believes a refurbished Nike Ajax missile will attract more attention and add to school spirit.
Grabke's Body Shop is really doing something special for the University and the community. The missile is expected to be back on its stand just outside of the Glass Bowl in time for the home opener against Temple on September 25th. Be sure to visit the rocket on your way to your next Rockets home game. It might just be a little piece to your experience at the Glass Bowl, but after all; it is the little things that make life so special.
