SOUTHWEST ASIA: Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Nov. 9, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.
In Afghanistan, coalition forces came under intense fire from enemy firing positions in Asadabad. An Air Force B-1B Lancer engaged the enemy positions with guided bomb unit-31s. During the engagement, U.S. Navy F/A-18 Hornets and F/A-18F Super Hornets provided armed overwatch to assist friendly forces on the ground.
A Royal Air Force Harrier GR-7 engaged an enemy position with Enhanced Paveway II munitions near Now Zad. Coalition forces were taking fire from the enemy held position. The on-scene joint terminal attack controller confirmed that the mission was a success.
During the same mission, GR-7s performed shows of force to deter enemy activities near Now Zad. The missions were reported as successful by the JTAC.
A French Mirage 2000 engaged an enemy position with a GBU-12 in Garmsir. The JTAC confirmed the strike as a success.
In support of a coalition convoy traveling through Delarem, a GR-7 performed a show of force to deter enemy actions. The show of force was reported as a success by the JTAC.

In total, 36 close-air-support missions were flown in support of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.
Ten Air Force and RAF surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, two RAF aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.
In Iraq, Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons targeted a building containing an Improvised Explosive Device in Baghdad. The JTAC confirmed that the mission was successful.
In total, coalition aircraft flew 48 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions supported coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided over watch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.
Twenty-five Air Force, Navy, and Royal Australian Air Force surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. Additionally, three Air Force and RAF aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.
Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster III's provided intratheater heavy airlift support, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa.
Approximately 135 airlift sorties were flown; 477 tons of cargos were delivered, and 2,262 passengers were transported. This included approximately 36,151 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in Afghanistan.
Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Iraq, and Republic of Korea flew in support of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq.
On Nov. 8, Air Force and RAF aerial refueling crews flew 46 sorties and off-loaded approximately 2.9 million pounds of fuel to 235 receiving aircraft.
