Terma A/S, The Spanish Coast Guard enhances its surveillance capabilities with three Side Looking Airborne Radar Systems (SLAR) from Terma. The airborne radar system is designed to detect oil pollution on the sea.
Through German Optimare Sensorsysteme AG in Bremerhaven, which specializes in marine surveillance, Terma has signed a contract for delivery of three SLAR systems for the Spanish Coast Guard.
The SLAR sensors are exceptional for aerial and marine survey, due its superior radar image developed to survey the sea for pollution and coverage of a large area in short amount of time. The Terma SLAR sensors will be mounted in a CN235-300 multi-mission tactical aircraft built and supplied by CASA/EADS.
The Spanish Coast Guard uses the CN235-300 aircraft for tactical transport, maritime patrol, and navigator training. The new SLAR system will in this case improve their aerial and marine survey and is supplied and installed during 2006-2007.
The SLAR system can easily be integrated with a wide variety of surveillance sensors, navigation equipment, and video systems. The SLAR features a long-range sensor, capable of detecting oil pollution up to 20-25 nautical miles to both sides of the aircraft, depending on weather and sea conditions.
Ships, land, ice, and other strong radar echoes are visible up to 40 nautical miles to both sides of the aircraft. Several cameras, such as photo camera, low level light camera, video camera, FLIR (Forward Looking Infra-Red camera), can be connected to the system.
The radar system receives all relevant annotation data from the aircraft such as position, altitude, heading, date, time, etc. These data are stored together with the images and may be used for evidence in court.
