, The Defense Acquisition Program Agency said on Friday (Nov. 24) that it will replace an imported component used in the K-1 recovery tank with a locally made one. The move will save 44.9 billion won starting in 2008 and reduce noise from the tank.
The auxiliary power unit (APU) for the gas turbine engine used in the K-1 recovery vehicle to enhance efficiency and economic value will be replaced with a diesel engine auxiliary power unit developed by Rotem, a rolling-stock company, according to the agency.
The APU for the K-1 recovery tank is used to supply emergency power, recharge batteries and heat the crew cabin in case the main engine ceases to function.
The imported APU for the gas turbine engine often had problems due to malfunctions of its precision parts, limiting its operation.
Colonel Lee Sang-beom said that to resolve the trouble the agency checked nighttime operations of the K-1 recovery vehicle since last May and upon the recommendation of defense industry firms and the Advanced Defense Development Agency, concluded that the locally developed APU should be used for the next-generation tanks to be mass-produced in 2008.
