Su-27 crash Salgareda Airshow 1990
On 9th September 1990, a Su-27 coded "14 Red" crashed during an aerobatic display in Salgareda, Italy, killing the LII test pilot Rimas AA Stankeavicius. The accident invastigating board established that the aircaft was not to blame. The airfield in Salgareda was generally described as "treacherous" and "beastly" to use for aerobatics, because it was surrounded by green fields with no visual reference points for judging altitude and position. That day Stankeavicius had been under considerable stress and began a loop too low, running out of altitude as he pulled out. A member of the airhow's organising committee, S. Moretto, who by mischance was standing a bit too close to the point of impact, was also killed. Stankeavicius' death was a severe blow to the Buran (Soviet space shuttle) programme, as he was deputy commander of the shuttle crew training group. Excerpt from video "Test pilots.
