Cyber Warfare

Can computer software really be a effective weapon of war??

Has anybody implemented cyber warfare in a conventional war?

Virus and worms became effective in commercial systems
But what about in military networks and computers.

Nearly every area in military are having computers.

Though computers have been implemented extensively in military, why is cyber warfare not implemented?

Much of the military IT networks are way ahead of the "regular" networks that we see today. For example, TCP/IP and other protocols were not really implemented in public areas when it was already being used and tested in DoD. I won't be surprised to see if DoD runs their complex network on some other protocol unknown to common man... one may ask, then how does DoD communicate with rest of the world that is using common protocols available? Well, one way to over come that is through encapsulation... which is a subject on it's own.

Other reasons why cyber warfare from military to military is not common is because of high encryption, high security and invisible networks that major world militaries operate on. This idea of protected military networks may change as we advance through the ever changing world of Information Technology because I believe nothing is beyond human mind.

not true. the US used cyberwarfare in 1991. they attacked the Iraqi C4I systems with specialised viruses/trojans and bots.

the Chinese are believed to have a department totally dedicated to Cyberwarfare. The US Military last year traced over 90% of the attempted intrusions back to Chinese server links.

I haven't seen anything on this from Chinese government but it seems they have started working on info/cyber warfare technology and strategy to fight it and prevention. Maybe with this research china will be able to come up with some new technologies, who knows?

China Investing in Information Warfare Technology, Doctrine

http://www.defencetalk.com/news/publish/article_002702.php

WASHINGTON: China appears to be taking a page from U.S. doctrine and working to improve its information warfare capabilities, according to a comprehensive DoD report on Chinese military power released July 19.

In 2004, China introduced a new term in the country's military doctrine: "local wars under conditions of informationalization."

In DoD's 2005 report to Congress on China's military power, defense officials explain this term refers to the People's Liberation Army's "emphasis on information technology as a force multiplier."
